Entrevista a "Nexilva"

Hace pocas semanas tuvimos la gran oportunidad de hacerle una entrevista a los chicos de "Nexilva" una banda de Technical Deathcore procedente de Reino Unido. En esta entrevista abordamos temas acerca de su ultima producción Eschatologies y es donde nos hablan por todo lo que pasaron para poder grabar este álbum tan brutal. Toda la banda participó en las respuestas de cada pregunta, ya saben solo por Atasque.

1. Es un placer tener el honor de hacerle algunas preguntas acerca de la banda.

Respuesta: "Gracias, nos alegra que te hayas tomado el tiempo para hacernos algunas preguntas."

2. Eschatologies ha sido sin duda uno de los mejores discos del año, vemos el esfuerzo de la banda en los shows. Cuéntanos un poco sobre el nuevo material?

Respuesta:. "El álbum nos llevó una gran cantidad de tiempo para terminar de escribirlo. Sabíamos que queríamos hacer un álbum con mucho más sentimientos a la misma vez en comparación a nuestras anteriores producciones. Todos disfrutamos de la idea de cantar con los arreglos orquestales y otros efectos de sonido para añadir otra dimensión a lo que sería nuestro sonido futuro. También decidimos recaer en una sintonización  G. Cuando las letras crean una sensación más oscura teniendo en cuenta el bajo y las guitarras y dando lugar a un espacio más pesado.

Como producto final, Eschatologies tiene una amplia gama de intensidades y melodías que creemos que hace un álbum aún más interesante. Empujamos los límites de lo que 'pensamos' era la forma en que debe sonar (como se muestra en versiones anteriores) y dio a luz a la Nexilva que es hoy ".

3. Durante la grabación del álbum tuvieron que enfrentar algún problema o ¿Todo salió a la perfección?

Respuesta: La grabación del álbum fue mucho más sencillo que escribir, lo grabamos todo nosotros mismos en nuestra sala de ensayo en el que vivimos en el norte-este del Reino Unido en la forma tradicional de grabar cada instrumento por separado grabamos las guitarras por primera vez, después obsesivamente escuchamos las pistas y el uso de tablaturas para aprender y luego grabamos el bajo y la voz debido al hecho de que no teníamos batería y tuvimos que utilizar software de simulación de tambor, donde Connor escribió usando midi, con el fin de no dejar que la banda acabe de disminuir sin otro lanzamiento sólo porque no habíamos encontrado un baterista. Uno de nuestros guitarristas en el momento y amigo Andy mezcló el álbum y, finalmente, Andy pasó la batuta a Meyrick en Floodgate Studios. En cuanto al vocalista invitado en el álbum va nuestro gran amigo Ricky de una banda local llamada 'Osiah' grabó sus voces brutales de la pista undécima en Eschatologies nombrada 'Premonitions' en nuestra sala de ensayo con nosotros. El otro invitado era vocal de Meyrick. Lo grabamos en su estudio en Londres cuando estábamos de gira con su banda Exist Inmortal de nuevo en mayo de 2013. Meyrick, si tú no has oído hablar de su banda, incorpora cleans vocals y screams en su sonido y tuvimos una idea para una sección de la pista decimotercera en el álbum ('Evil Will Prevail') donde haríamos una determinación final de todo el álbum con una parte vocal más limpia que conduce a un dúo de clean vocals y screams. Meyrick proporciona todas las voces limpias en un dueto con Gary. Todo salió muy bien! "

4. El álbum es el antídoto perfecto a la brutalidad, ¿Cuál fue el mejor ingrediente para grabar algo tan brutal?

Respuesta: "Todo el mundo tiene su propia visión de lo que es" brutal " a algunas personas les gustan los breakdowns un poco más lentos, a otros con ritmos entrecortados mas rápidos pero en Nexilva nos gusta la instensidad multifasética en nuestra música con alta velocidad, con un trabajo muy interesante en la guitarra con Twiddly y Gary donde parece ser un hombre muy enojado. Eso es lo que vemos como la clave de la brutalidad. "

5. Cuéntanos sobre el vídeo para la canción "Eschatologies", fue grabado en un clima muy frío. ¿Tuvieron problemas con estas adversidades?

Respuesta: "Habíamos estado planeando las ideas de lo que nos gustaría a partir de un vídeo de la música alrededor de tres cuartas partes del camino a través de la escritura del álbum basado en la sensación de la música que habíamos escrito y con la dirección de la épica de Gary, fantásticas letras como la principal "historia" de lo que se haría. También tomamos en cuenta el clima, por tanto la nieve era casi parte superior de nuestra lista en nuestra especificación . En este momento la última lluvia de nieve fue inmensa, hace como un año o dos atrás se dió esto, o de otra forma teníamos que esperar otro año para conseguir una gran lluvia de nieve! Mientras tanto Simon estuvo explorando algunos lugares increíbles para la ubicación de la filmación. tenía visitado el Castlerigg Stone Circle como niño con sus padres, por lo que comenzó a recopilar imágenes que se encuentran en Internet para mostrarle al resto del grupo. El círculo de piedra que se encuentra cerca de Keswick en el noroeste del Reino Unido, estaba a 2-3 horas y debíamos conducir muy lejos de donde vivimos. Cuando se optó por utilizar la pista del título del álbum para el vídeo después decidimos añadir algunas ideas desde el concepto lírico de Gary para la pista 'Eschatolgies' decidimos incorporar una figura encapuchada en el vídeo para mostrar algo siniestro al igual que el sentido de Eschatologies, como parte de la teología que se trata con el fin de las cosas tales como la vida. El círculo de piedras en el vídeo en sí es como un poder dentro de la humanidad tratando de mantener la "figura oscura"  [que representa la muerte de la humanidad]

En el set del vídeo era una vista muy impresionante. La nieve caía muy fuerte y ligera cubriendo las cimas de las colinas y las montañas distantes, todo se veía tan blanco. Me sentía como en el set de una filmación de Black Metal. ¡Fue increíble! Fue extremadamente frío. En un principio nos quedamos en nuestros coches ya que afuera era muy frío y durante unos 15 a 25 minutos teníamos que repetir el ciclo. En conjunto nos quedamos allí por cerca de 5 horas. Puedes ver en el vídeo el cielo que se oscurecía de forma transitoria a lo largo de la progresión de las escenas en el corte final también! "

6. El álbum es muy adictivo. ¿Qué clase de respuesta han recibido de parte de sus seguidores sobre el nuevo álbum?

Respuesta: "Gracias por las amables palabras que desde nuestra perspectiva, Eschatologies ha recibido una respuesta enormemente positiva desde su lanzamiento se nos ha dado muchos elogios por muchos de nuestros compañeros en las bandas, así como revisores de revistas y websites cuya opinión es positiva! vale la pena el infierno, no sólo para nosotros sino probablemente para todos sus lectores con el apoyo de nuestro mejor amigo / manager  Simon Garrod, quien también es el director y gerente de Monolithic Music y el siempre creciente UK Tech-Fest, así como los chicos de Subliminal Groove en América del Norte, Ghost Music y James Monteith (Hold Tight PR / Guitarrista de TesseracT) a Eschatologies se le ha dado una gran oportunidad y gracias a eso nos sentimos muy felices de que pueda ser escuchado por muchas personas y, con suerte, lo disfrutó todo el mundo!

La segunda canción del álbum fue en la BBC Radio One’s Rock Show con Dan P Carter. Fue un momento de locura, porque los cinco de nosotros habíamos tomado impulsivamente un paseo junto al bosque de Kielder en Northumbria sólo para pasar el rato, mirar las estrellas y disfrutar de su mutua compañía lejos de nuestras vidas juntos en la banda. En nuestro camino de vuelta donde estábamos escuchando el show de Dan P Carter y de pronto escuchamos “The Misdirection of God” de la nada. Fue una gran sorpresa!

A nuestro amigo John Whitmore de 'The Circle Pit' le gustó mucho el álbum. Lo escuchó y generosamente nos concedió un 9,5 / 10. Él también vino a vernos tocar en el Scream Lounge, Croydon cuando estábamos en nuestra pequeña gira en abril (2014) con Damned Spring Fragrantia y From Sorrow, donde él nos dio un gran pastel de chocolate que su encantadora esposa había preparado para nosotros. Tenía nuestro emblema en glaseado blanco y todo! "

7. Tienen algún proyecto en el futuro, alguna nueva canción o un vídeo?

Respuesta: "Nosotros siempre estamos escribiendo más y más material con el objetivo de añadir otra dimensión a nuestro sonido. Hemos estado escribiendo y grabando Demos de nuevas pistas y practicando, tocando en shows y trabajando en nuestros puestos de trabajo reales, Connor es básicamente la columna vertebral de nuestro proceso en la escritura y lo ha sido desde el principio. Él ha estado trabajando muy duro y gracias a eso hemos crecido y asi poder ver el sonido futuro de Nexilva. Estamos disfrutando mucho de la escucha y el aprendizaje de los Demos en los temas nuevos pero son extremadamente duras, esto hace la reproducción de música en la banda mucho más divertido.

Hace unos meses filmamos un nuevo vídeo musical en la Iglesia Covehithe, Thetford Forest y Kessington Beach por sexta pista en el álbum titulado "Necromancer". Es debido a  esto que NO SABEMOS CUALQUIER FECHA DE LANZAMIENTO PARA NUEVO MATERIAL ".

8. Ustedes se denominan así mismo como 'Progresive Death Metal', pero muchos de sus seguidores tienden a la etiqueta como "Technical Deathcore". ¿Hay alguna variación lo que es el genero para ustedes?

Respuesta:.. "No estamos realmente en fases al ser nombrado como cualquier tipo específico de música. Nuestros dos primeros lanzamientos [Trials Of Mankind & Defile The Flesh Of Innocence] tenían un sonido Technical Deathcore, definitivamente para “Eschatologies", sin embargo, tiene muchos géneros encerrados en él. Nos gusta todo tipo de música metal, sino también disfrutar de otros géneros. Básicamente todos nos encanta, ya sea la música que suena bien para nosotros. Suena como una cosa estúpida de decir, pero todos hemos estado allí donde nos sentimos avergonzados de disfrutar de una banda sólo por el género. Como todos maduramos en la banda y crecimos junto con el sabor de la vergüenza en el género dejado cada uno de nosotros. Estamos todos los fans de la música electrónica, jazz, hip hop, etc. Tu nombras el género es probable que a cavar. Creemos que porque nos hemos convertido en una parte de progressive / tech / djent en Reino Unido hemos tenido nuestros ojos bien abiertos a longitudes en cuanto a la escena que se extiende en términos de la cadena “heavy”. UK Tech-Fest y Euroblast son los mejores ejemplos absolutos de lo que estamos tratando de conseguir aquí. Si nos fijamos en el line-up para Tech-Fest 2014 verás que bandas como Monuments y Vildhjarta que vienen descendiendo como una tonelada de ladrillos, compartiendo el cartel con The Algorithm y que te dan ganas de tirar cohetes a ti! La clave es la aceptación de la música. Es difícil aceptar que otras personas tienen opiniones sobre lo que es la buena música y lo que no lo es. Aceptando que en la música no hay una respuesta equivocada a lo que te gusta escuchar, sólo opiniones diferentes que deben ser aceptadas con respeto”.

9. Con qué banda te gustaría tocar en el futuro?

Respuesta:. "Estamos muy agradecidos por haber tocado en el pasado con bandas muy buenas, así como las bandas que han confirmado tocar junto a nosotros en un futuro próximo. Estamos tocando en el Ghostfest donde bandas icónicas como Suicide Silence, Ingested y Annotations Of An Autopsy que fueron bandas que nos inspiraron a nosotros en los días en que todo lo que queríamos hacer era escuchar la cosa más pesada que podríamos tener en nuestras manos. Probablemente hemos hablado de este festival demasiado en la entrevista, pero el line-up para UK Tech-Fest 2014 es enorme! Sikth, Monuments, Vildhjarta, The HAARP Machine, No Consequence, David Maxim Micic Performing Bilo, From Sorrow To Serenity, Carcer City, Aeolist ... Demasiados para mencionar!

ENGLISH

1. It is a pleasure to have the honor to ask you some questions about the band.

Answer: "Thanks man. We're glad you've taken the time to ask us some questions"

2. Eschatologies has certainly been one of the best albums of the year, the effort of the band shows. Tell us a bit about the new material.

Answer: "The album took us quite an extensive amount of time to write, somewhere around the two year mark infact and we knew we wanted to make an album with a lot more feeling to it in comparison to our previous releases. We all enjoyed the idea of playing about with orchestral arrangements and other sound effects to add another dimension to what our future sound would be. Also we decided to move from dropped A tuning to dropped G when writing to make the feel of the bass and guitars darker and possibly heavier.

As a final product, Eschatologies has a vast array of intensities and melodics which we think makes an album all the more interesting. We pushed the boundaries of what we 'thought' was how we should sound (as shown in previous releases) and gave birth to the Nexilva that it is today."

3. Since the album was released, I've listened to it too many times and still I'm still not getting tired of listening. When recording the album did you face any problems or did everything go perfectly?

Answer: "The recording of the album was a lot more straight forward than writing it. We recorded everything ourselves at our practise room where we live in the north-east of the UK in the traditional way of recording each instrument individually. We recorded the guitars first after obsessively listening to the tracks and using tablature to learn from and then bass and vocals. Due to the fact that we didn't have a drummer we had to use drum simulation software, which Connor wrote using midi, in order to not let the band just diminish without another release just because we hadn't found a drummer. One of our guitarists at the time and close friend Andy mixed the album and finally Andy passed the baton onto Meyrick at Floodgate Studios to master. As far as the guest vocals on the album go, our close friend Ricky from a local band called 'Osiah' recorded his insanely brutal vocals for the eleventh track on Eschatologies named 'Premonitions' at our practise room with us. The other guest vocal was from Meyrick. We recorded it at his studio in London when we were on tour with his band Exist Immortal back in May 2013. Meyrick, if you haven't heard his band, incorporates clean singing and screaming into their sound and we had an idea for a section of the thirteenth track on the album ('Evil Will Prevail') where we'd make a final resolve of the whole album with a main clean vocal section leading into a duet of clean vocals and screams. Meyrick provided all of the clean vocals in a duet with Gary. It worked out so well!"

4. The material is perfect antidote to the brutality, which was the best ingredient to record something so brutal?

Answer: "Everyone has their own view of what is 'brutal'. Some people like really slow dissonant breakdowns, some like fast paced choppy rhythms but in Nexilva we like the instensity of multilayering our music with high speed blasting, interesting guitar work with twiddly fills and Gary being an angry angry man. That's what we see as the key to brutality."

5. Tell us about the video for the song "Eschatologies", it was recorded in a very cold climate. Did you have problems with these adversities?

Answer: "We had been planning the ideas of what we'd want from a music video roughly three quarters of the way through writing the album based upon the feel of the music we'd written and with the direction of Gary's epic, fantastical lyrics as the main 'story' of what would go on. we also took into consideration the weather. We felt like the songs written far sounded like a cold, frost-bitten soundtrack to something occult therefore snow was almost top of our list of our specification. At this time the last downpour of snow was like a year or two ago and we had wait another year or so to get a huge downpour of snow! In the meantime Simon scouted out some amazing places for the location of the shoot. He had visited the Castlerigg Stone Circle as a child with his parents so he began compiling images found on the internet to show the rest of the group. The stone circle that is located near Keswick in the north-west of the UK, a 2-3 hour drive away from where we live. When we chose to use the title track of the album for the video we then decided to add some ideas from Gary's lyrical concept for the track 'Eschatologies' we decided to incorporate a hooded figure into the video to show something ominous much like the meaning of Eschatology as a part of the theology concerned with the end of things such as life. The circle of stones in the video itself are like a power within mankind trying to keep the hooded 'figure' [representing death of humanity] at bay. 

On the set of the filming it was a breathtaking view. Light snow fall covering the peaks of the distant hillside and mountains, epic white snow everywhere. It felt like the set of a black metal filming. It was amazing! It was extremely cold. We would run out of our cars after getting really warm off the radiators and film for about 15-25 minutes and repeat the cycle. All in all we were there for about 5 hours. You can see the sky darkening transiently throughout the progression of scenes in the final cut too!"

6. The album is very addictive. What kind of response have you recieved from your followers about the new album?

Answer: "Thank you for the kind words! From our perspective, Eschatologies has received a hugely positive response! Since its release we've been given many compliments by many of our peers in bands as well as reviewers from magazines and webzines whose opinion is worth a hell of a lot not only to ourselves but probably to all of their readers. With the backing of our best friend/ manager/ tour driver Simon Garrod, who is also the managing director of Monolithic Music and the evergrowing UK Tech-Fest, as well as the guys at Subliminal Groove in North America, Ghost Music and James Monteith (Hold Tight PR/ Guitarist of TesseracT) Eschatologies has been given the chance that we feel was imperitive for it to be heard and, hopefully, enjoyed all around the world! 

The second track on the album was played on BBC Radio One's Rock Show with Dan P Carter. It was a crazy moment because all five of us had impulsively taken a ride together to Kielder Forest in Northumbria just to hang out, stargaze and enjoy each other's company away from our lives together in the band. On our way back we were listening to Dan P Carter's show and he played 'The Misdirection Of God' out of nowhere. It was a great surprise! 

Our friend John Whitmore from 'The Circle Pit' webzine really enjoyed the album. He reviewed it and generously awarded us with a 9.5/ 10! He also came down to see us perform at Scream Lounge, Croydon when we were on our short tour in April (2014) with Damned Spring Fragrantia and From Sorrow To Serenity where he handed us a family sized chocolcate cake that his lovely wife had baked for us. It had our emblem on in white icing and everything!"

7. Have any projects in the future, any new song or video?

Answer: "We're always writing more and more material and aiming to add another dimension to our sound. We've been writing and recording demos of new tracks in between practising, playing shows and working at our real jobs. Connor's basically the backbone of our writing process and has been since the start. He's been working real hard to write what we've grew to see is the future of Nexilva's sound. We're really enjoying listening and learning the demos of the new tracks but they're extremely hard but it makes playing music in the band a lot more fun.

A few months back we filmed a new music video on Covehithe Church, Thetford Forest and Kessington Beach for the sixth track on the album entitled 'Necromancer'. It's due out DON'T KNOW ANY DATE FOR ITS RELEASE." 

8. You guys class yourself as 'Progressive Death Metal', but many of your followers tend to label you as 'Technical Deathcore'. Is there some variation in what genre you see yourselves as?

Answer: "We aren't really phased by being pidgeon-holed as any specific type of music. Our first two releases [Trials Of Mankind & Defile The Flesh Of Innocence] had a definite technical deathcore sound to it. 'Eschatologies' however, has many genres encased within it. We enjoy all sorts of metal music but we also enjoy other genres. Basically we all love music that sounds good to us. It sounds like a stupid thing to say but we've all been there where we feel embarrassed to enjoy a band just because of genre. As we all matured in the band and grew together the embarrassment of taste in genre left each of us. We're all fans of electronic music, jazz, hip hop etc. You name the genre we'll probably dig it. We believe that because we've become a part of the humbled progessive/ tech/ djent scene in the UK we've had our eyes opened to the lengths that this scene stretches in terms of the heavy and the chilled being brought together and playing shows under one roof. UK Tech-Fest and Euroblast are the absolute best examples of what we're trying to get across here. If you look at the line-up for Tech-Fest 2014 you'll see that bands like Monuments and Vildhjarta who come down on you like a tonne of bricks share the bill with The Algorithm who makes you want to rave yourself brainless and to another extreme Jon Gomm is performing! The key is acceptance in music. Accepting that other people have opinions on what is good music and what isn't. Accepting that in music there is no wrong answer to what you like to listen to, just differing opinions which should be respectfully accepted."

9. With which band would you like to play in the future?

Answer: "We're blessed to have played with the bands that we have already as well as bands we're confirmed to play alongside in the near future. We're playing Ghostfest where such iconic bands like Suicide Silence, Ingested and Annotations Of An Autopsy who were inpirational to us in the days where all we wanted to do was listen to the most heavy thing we could get our hands on. We've probably talked about this festival way too much in the interview but the line-up for UK Tech-Fest 2014 is huge! Sikth, Monuments, Vildhjarta, The HAARP Machine, No Consequence, David Maxim Micic performing Bilo, From Sorrow To Serenity, Carcer City, Aeolist... just too many to mention!
